Hodei Urrutxua is currently a New Frontiers Fellow at the Astronautics Research Group of the University of Southampton. He completed his BS/MSc in Aeronautical Engineering (2010) and MSc in Aerospace Engineering (2012) at the Technical University of Madrid, where he also did his PhD (2015) on "High Fidelity Models for Near-Earth Object Dynamics" under the supervision of Prof. Jesús Peláez and Claudio Bombardelli.

Research interests

 

My main research interests revolve around high-fidelity and high-performance numerical orbit and attitude propagation techniques in celestial mechanics. In this regard, I have expertise in the study, performance analysis and applications of regularized orbital formulations, most particularly the DROMO formulation. I also worked in extending these regularization principles to the attitude dynamics in combination with perturbation techniques.

Another major research field has been the study of the capture dynamics of temporarily captured asteroids in the vicinity of the Earth, as well as the study of slow deflection techniques for modifying the orbits of potentially hazardous asteroids.

I have also made contributions to the field of active space debris removal through this involvement in the development of the "ion beam shepherd" concept and the Ion Beam Interaction Simulator (IBIS).

Other research contributions also include rotating space tethers, where I have studied their long-term attitude evolution and explored their potential uses for orbit stabilization and artificially enhanced frozen orbits.

My skills also cover numerical integration methods, numerical techniques for scientific computing and the numerical simulation of dynamical systems.
