After study and research in physics at the Universities of Oxford, Brighton, Reading and Paris VII I joined the British mobile communications company Racal (now Thales) as Technical Manager in 1980, where I managed collaborative R&D projects in Mobile Communications, Intelligent Transport Systems, and Road Pricing. I retired from Thales in February 2010 and am now an independent consultant in Intelligent Transport Systems and Road Pricing.

I am the editor of two books: "Mobile Information Systems" (1990) and "Advances in Mobile Information Systems" (1998), and of two Artech House book Series, "ITS" and "Mobile Communications". I have many publications in solid state physics, artificial intelligence, mobile communications, and Intelligent Transport Systems. My current focus is on the public and political acceptability of road pricing, on which topic I have given evidence to the UK House of Commons, presented scientific papers at UK and international conferences, and written a major report for the UK RAC Foundation.
Primary research group: Transportation Group
I am a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Council, and of the Executive Committees of its Automotive and Road Transport Technical Network, and its Berkshire |Network.
I am also Honorary Secretary of ITS(UK)’s Road User Charging Interest Group.
