Prof. Roy Butterfield is Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

 

Main research contributions:

Co-originator of Boundary Element Methods and application to modelling of piles: Macro-modelling of rigid, shallow foundations: Venice - analysis of subsidence, stability and strength of leaning towers: Photogrammetric measurement of displacement fields: Soil mechanics – Ln(v) versus Ln(p') modelling of soil compression, application to marine clays, contributions to Dimensional Analysis, electro-osmosis and use of the velocity hodograph: Design and displacement of gravity retaining wall foundations.

University and teaching:

Head of Department of Civil Engineering (1979-89): early champion of 4-year courses and full-year student exchanges with EU universities: played 2nd bassoon in orchestra for many years: supervised 20 doctoral students.
