Southampton PhD Student wins engineering research prize

Published: 14 March 2014

University of Southampton PhD student, Laurence Clough, took first prize at the recent Young Researchers' Conference hosted by The Institution of Structural Engineers. Laurence won the prestigious award (including £500) for his poster presentation entitled: ‘The synergistic response of structures to thermal and blast loading'.

The Conference, which took place on 5 March at the King's Fund, London, is hosted every year to celebrate the best in engineering research and sees the brightest students join industry professionals and academics in a showcase of leading research in the field.

Laurence said:"Given the quality of work on show I never expected to win - I've never won anything before, so this is a real pleasure!"

Leroy Gardner, Chairman of The Institution of Structural Engineers Research Panel, presented the prize.

"This is the tenth Young Researchers' Conference I've attended," said Leroy, "and I continue to be impressed by the high standard of work on display. It is a marvellous opportunity for these students to get their work into the public eye, and perhaps be exposed to questions that their PhD supervisor might not ask. There is always a terrific, lively atmosphere based on the exchange of ideas, which is tremendously motivating, I think."

All the winning presentations, plus conference proceedings, are available on The Institution of Structural Engineers website at www.istructe.org/yrc
