Exciting career opportunities in prospect for graduates of two new innovative Environmental Science programmes

Published: 24 October 2014

Two new Environmental Sciences undergraduate degree programmes have been launched to give students interested in developing specific skills and knowledge for successful careers in popular new areas of employment. The first students will enrol in September 2015.

BSc (Hons) Environmental Management with Business

This degree provides students with the crucial knowledge needed by an environmental scientist and the business skills of a management specialist. Graduates will be well placed for a career as an environmental professional. The third year will include a core practical module, optional modules to allow students to create their own portfolio of skills and a company placement in the final semester.

BSc (Hons) Environmental Monitoring and Modelling

This degree enables students to collect, interpret and communicate complex data to understand issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, overexploitation of resources and many more environmental challenges. Leading academics in both Environmental Science and Computer Science teach on this programme and graduates will enjoy wide-ranging career opportunities.

The University of Southampton’s environmental science programmes were the first to be established in the UK in the early 1970s, many former students are now in senior positions in industry and academia.

Graduates of BSc (Hons) Environmental Management with Business and BSc (Hons) Environmental Monitoring and Modelling will be entering the job market at a time when companies will be increasingly seeking new professionals with these important skills sets in a greener and sustainable economy.

The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) says a survey has found only 13 per cent of companies are confident they have the skills to cope. “Businesses need to urgently turn what is a growing and prevailing list of challenges into opportunities,” says IEMA Chief Executive Tim Balcon. “The most effective way of grasping this opportunity is by ensuring that all businesses have access to a new set of skills – environment and sustainability – to ensure that UK plc and businesses globally can transition and survive in this new economy.”
