The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights renews its commitment to scholarships and establishes a new prize for world-leading students in Ship Science.

Published: 10 November 2014

Ship Science at the University of Southampton is delighted to announce The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights has agreed to support an academic prize for students in Ship Science over the next three years. The Shipwrights are also renewing an ongoing commitment by supporting a further two scholarships over the next two years. Both of these schemes are recognizing both the quality of student achievement in Ship Science, but also the importance of prizes and scholarships such as this in building strong recruitment to the subject area and also to the University of Southampton.

From cruise liners, high-speed ferries, container ships, oil tankers, sailing yachts, luxury motor craft, lifeboats, hydrofoils, hovercraft to submarines and underwater vehicles, Ship Science is a naval architecture and marine engineering degree course unique to the University of Southampton.

Our students have the opportunity to be associated with one of the most respected marine design consultancies in the world, the Wolfson Unit, experts in experimental wind tunnel and towing tank testing, who are UK Sport innovation partners and have worked with clients including America's Cup teams, Volvo Ocean racing and the Vendée Globe event.

The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights philanthropic support will fund two, four year scholarships on our MEng degrees with one commencing in 2014 and the second in 2015. In terms of the prize, it will be awarded for the next three years to the highest achieving student in the first year of their course.

‘We are very pleased to acknowledge the continued generosity of The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights by them continuing and increasing their support of Southampton,’ said Professor Philip Wilson, Professor of Ship Dynamics.

‘These scholarships and prizes will improve our ability to recruit the best and brightest students from around the world. We very much look forward to working with the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights over the next five years and to welcoming the Livery Company to Ship Science within the faculty of Engineering and the Environment to meet our students.’
