Further recognition for innovative teaching for Simon Kemp

Published: 12 November 2014

Principal Teaching Fellow in Engineering and the Environment, Simon Kemp, has been recognised for his contribution to education by the University of Southampton's newly-founded Institute for Learning Innovation and Development (ILIaD).

Simon teaches a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules across the broad area of Education for Sustainable Development. The Environmental Management Systems involves real-life consultancy projects for postgraduates; they work with a range of different industrial partners each year.

“Working with students on projects with external companies is different each year as we choose businesses in varying sectors,” he explains. “They get a great deal out of the projects and I would say I learn as much as the students through the process.”

In 2013, Simon was named ‘Most Innovative Teacher of the Year’ by the Times Higher Education magazine at a ceremony considered to be the ‘Oscars’ of the sector. He also holds a National Teaching Fellowship awarded by the Higher Education Academy.

ILIaD works with lecturers in Faculties across the University supporting them to fulfil their ambitions to enhance the student experience through effective, sustainable and quality assured applications of learning technology.
