Engineering and the Environment have had another successful year in this year’s Universities Business Challenge (UBC).

Notes for editors

The UBC is the premier UK business simulation competition with teams from Universities across the UK competing against each other. It offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to improve their knowledge of business putting their theory into practice and developing skills in team-working and leadership. Over 260 teams from universities across the UK took part in the challenge, competing to achieve maximum profit, acquire new business and enhance customer satisfaction.

This year, three teams of second year undergraduate students from Engineering and the Environment were entered into the competition. Only one team made it to the semi-final stage held at the University of Bristol in March. Team members, from Mechanical Engineering, Adam Dakin, Ashish Thanki, Elisavet Hadjiodysseos and Aleksander Borczyk are seen in the picture at the entrance to the Great Hall at the University of Bristol.

Team Leader Ashish Thanki, commented “UBC has been a great experience for myself and the team. We had to utilise our skills and work together efficiently, all under time pressures. We were given the opportunity to make important decisions that would impact on the business dramatically. I personally enjoyed being the group leader of individuals that were very easy to work with. I can gracefully say that this was a pleasant experience and has highly motivated me to pursue a career where I am able to make important decisions on a regular basis as UBC has allowed me to gain this skill.”

Team member Elisavet said “It was something new for us. It was amazing. We enhanced our team working skills and we’ve learnt about innovation. We see the world differently”. Adam said “I have developed team working skills and have insight into how business leaders make decisions”. Aleksander added “I can now see how to distinguish priorities whilst making business decisions”

Professor Anna Barney, Associate Dean for Education commented "Well done for getting so far and thanks for representing the University so positively. It’s always good to see people who want to take on that bit extra to their studies."
