Graduation 2015 marks achievements of students and honorary graduates

Around 5,000 students will attend Graduation at the University of Southampton this week, alongside seven leading figures from the fields of business, chemistry, engineering, Jewish history, maritime and poetry who will receive honorary degrees.

Chief Exectuive Officer of Lloyd’s Register, Richard Sadler, will be one of the seven recipents who will join this year’s graduates at ceremonies held on the University’s Highfield Campus. Lloyd’s Register Group is a global engineering, technical and business services organisation wholly owned by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

Richard joined the Royal Navy in 1975 as an Engineering Midshipman, before leaving to study at Newcastle University for a degree in Naval Architecture. He joined Lloyd’s Register in 1979 and took varying progressive roles through the organisation and was based in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

In 2004, after 25 years at LR, Richard joined the Royal Bank of Scotland as Director of Asset Management. Richard was then invited to rejoin Lloyd’s Register and in 2007 was appointed Chief Executive Officer.

Between 2010-2013 Richard co-Chaired the Marine Industries Leadership Council; in 2013 he was awarded the IET Coales medal for Innovation in Transport and he was President of The Welding Institute between 2010-2013. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineers and a Fellow of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

The University will also be awarding Fellowships to World War 2 poet, Captain Dennis Wilson from Southampton, who is known as ‘The Wilfred Owen of World War II’ and Southampton graduate Professor Andrew Bell, Chief Technical Officer for Defence Science and Technical Laboratory (DSTL).

The Graduation ceremonies will take place in the Turner Sims and the Nuffield from Wednesday 15 July to Thursday 23 July.
