Engineering students design and build structure for Boldrewood Innovation Campus

A group of five second year Civil Engineering students have designed and built a structure that now stands in front of our Boldrewood Innovation Campus has been released as part of our first engineering Design Show.

 

 

Integral to the design curriculum, ten student groups designed structures that were presented to, and judged by, an industry panel which included representatives from Kier and Mott MacDonald. The project ties in with an increased connection between our Civil Engineering design curriculum and Southampton City Council.

 

The design brief asked for a temporary structure for a site in Southampton adjacent to the medieval walls. This winning structure was designed to screen an existing unsightly footbridge, and to create a celebratory gateway for visitors.

 

 

The Design Show showcases Professor William Powrie’s, Dean of Engineering and the Environment, views on engineering at the University:

“Our students learn the principles of engineering during their studies and demonstrate their understanding through designing, building and testing exciting products that will make a difference to people’s lives.”

 

The structure now stands at our Boldrewood Innovation Campus. This is the first year that a student group’s design has been constructed at full scale, and the department has plans to make it an annual event.
