Professor Ian Williams wins CIWM professional award

Professor Ian Williams has won a Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) professional award, which was presented at the Resourcing the Future 2016 conference in London last week.

Professor Williams is this year’s winner of the JC Dawes Bursary, which provides £2,000 to finance travel and subsistence on a research or study programme into wastes management or related subjects.

Ian, who is Professor of Applied Environmental Science, Head of Centre for Environmental Science, and Associate Dean (Enterprise) in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment will be putting the bursary towards a study tour in Switzerland. As part of the tour, he will be meeting world-renowned resource and waste management experts at Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology at St Gallen, and in the Canton of Zurich. He will also be visiting state-of-the-art recycling facilities and operations in the Zurich region.

Professor Williams said:

“I’m delighted that the CIWM has decided to support my study tour with the J C Dawes Bursary. The UK still has a lot to learn about effective infrastructure and facilities that enable householders, industry and businesses to recover and/or recycle their waste. It is particularly important for the UK to learn from the Swiss experience as they have led the way globally in terms of recycling and urban mining for many decades. This award will enable me to understand better how the Swiss are operationally ensuring that they are benefitting from the resource revolution and to disseminate the know-how back to the UK waste sector.”
