Event details

Due to the growing interest in the music perception and enjoyment of adult cochlear implant (CI) users, there is a need for reliable outcome measures to assess benefits from new technologies and auditory music training programs. However, formal music perception tests that are commonly used with CI users do not capture real-world experiences with music.

Music questionnaires that have been used are informative but they lack psychometric properties and they cover aspects of music experience that have an impact on the quality of life (QoL), such as the confidence of CI users to sing, poorly. In this talk I will describe the development of a new psychometric questionnaire assessing CI users’ musical abilities, attitudes and activities. The new questionnaire intends to be a valid and reliable tool, sensitive to changes in CI users’ relationship with music as a result of music rehabilitation. The main advantages (and limitations) of the new instrument as well as its potential clinical utility, will be discussed.
