Mrs Kuan Yong Ching is Postgraduate research student within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Kuan Yong obtained her BSc in Chemistry in year 2006 and MSc in Chemistry in year 2008 from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Before coming to UK, she worked as an engineer responsible on research and development of electroless nickel plating in Seagate International, Malaysia.

Research interests

Biodegradable polymer; Atomic force microscopy

Loss or damage of the articular cartilage layer due to trauma or disease often leads to the development of osteoarthritis. Repair strategies based on harvesting and replacing autologous articular cartilage are naturally limited. Over the last two decades, approaches based on tissue engineering have become a rapidly growing field that holds great promise for the generation of implantable functional cartilage constructs. The aim of my research is to synthesis a cartilage replacement material that is mechanical adjustable and biodegradable so that it can provide a temporal structural support in the joint, while guiding the regeneration of new tissue until the entire construct is resorbed.

Research project(s)

Designing biomaterials for tissue engineering and tissue regeneration

Constitutive modelling of biodegradable polymers for cardiovascular tissue engineering applications.
