Mr Manan Thakkar is a Postgraduate research student with the AFM group within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Academic qualifications:

Work experience:

Research interests

  • Aerodynamics, particularly race car aerodynamics
  • Turbulence modelling using hybrid RANS/LES approaches
  • Direct numerical simulation
  • High performance computing

PhD title: Fluid flow over aerodynamically rough surfaces using Direct Numerical Simulations

Supervisors: Professor Neil Sandham and Professor Bharathram Ganapathisubramani

PhD research
  • Conduct large scale parallel computations and interpret results of Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of fluid flow over aerodynamically rough surfaces
  • Expand the current available database of rough surfaces to include simulation results from a wider variety of industrial surfaces used in engineering applications
  • Come up with techniques to correlate various simulation parameters and methods to reduce computational requirements of such large parallel simulations
MSc dissertation project (in collaboration with McLaren Racing)
  • Performed analysis of turbulent flow over a tandem cylinder geometry using hybrid RANS/LES methods in OpenFOAM
  • Conducted simulations in parallel, interpreted the results and checked the effects of successive mesh coarsening

Demonstrator for SESS6021 Applications of CFD.  Course leader - Dr Zheng-Tong Xie

  • Interact with 4th year and MSc students to answer their queries relating to theoretical and applied aspects of module tutorials using commercial CFD packages (Star-CCM+ and Fluent)
