What we do

The award-winning EngSoc (2011 Excellence in Volunteering Award for Commitment, 2012 EVA award for Leadership), or English Society in full, is one of the largest departmental societies in the University, and we're here to make studying English at Southampton as entertaining and rewarding as possible!

What we organise

We run socials once a fortnight with queue jump, discounted/subsidised entry and drinks deals. Dressing up is a must and prizes are awarded for the most creative outfits; highlights from the last year have been the Pirates vs. Ninjas social, our pre-AGM social with free drinks aplenty, and the Halloween Zombies vs. Survivors Apoca-lash.

As well as socials, we organise much larger events such as the award-winning (2012 Excellence in Volunteering Award for Leadership) Humanities Ball. The Ball takes place every Christmas, for which we join up with other disciplines to celebrate the end of term in black tie style with cocktails and live music. In addition to our alcoholic socials, we host the Quiz and Curry in the Union's newly-refurbished Bridge Bar, take trips to the theatre and hire out the soft play centre, Playzone, in Portsmouth. Seasonal activities include visits to the Christmas Market and ice rink in Winchester, and summer picnics on the Common in Southampton.

Every year we enter the University's intra-mural sport competitions: our Rounders team have been league champions for the last three years and our tennis and netball squads always perform well. Despite our top rankings we always play for fun, our teams are open to all members, and we're looking to set up new sports teams in October if there's demand - football, hockey: you decide!

In addition to all that, we hold regular book sales so you can get hold of course texts at reduced prices; we sell English Society hoodies at the end of first semester, and award a free hoodie to the person who provides us with the best (printable) English-related pun for the back, so get thinking!

EngSoc has a substantial Facebook presence with its main and Freshers' groups, which are great places to meet peers, club together into study groups, and find department-specific announcements about inaugural lectures and talks, as well as opportunities for theatre auditions, script-writing opportunities and volunteer placements. We're also on Twitter (@Soton_EngSoc), and have a shiny new website for this academic year!
