Dr Lena Wahlgren-Smith is a Research Fellow in English at the University of Southampton.

I studied history and Classics at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) and completed my doctoral thesis in Latin at the Classics department of Gothenburg University in 1993. Since my arrival at Southampton University in 1995, I have been responsible for the provision of Latin teaching for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. As part of my contract, I also offer Latin-related research support to colleagues and postgraduate students.

Research interests

My interests are in the field of Latin literature and include medieval letter-collections, extra-liturgical poetry and editorial technique.

I am involved with the international Cantum pulcriorem invenire project, which aims to develop our understanding of medieval conductus music: my part has included working with musicologists on textual matters, co-preparing a catalogue of the entire corpus, advising singers on pronunciation and preparing the texts for three CD recordings.

I am also part of the Hakluyt Editorial Project, which is contracted to publish a critical edition of Richard Hakluyt’s The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques, and Discoveries of the English Nation (second edition, 1598-1600).

Research projects

I am currently editing the Mongolian travel tales of Johannes de Planocarpini and William Rubruyk for the Hakluyt editorial project. I have recently finished an article on medieval letter-writing and am preparing an edition of the letters of Nicholas of Clairvaux for publication. I have also started work on an article on the performative aspect of conductus music; this is something I hope to develop further.
