Event details

This is the third annual F.T. Prince Memorial Lecture. These lectures are given every year in honour of the poet and scholar F.T. Prince, who was one of Southampton’s first English professors. Invited speakers explore new directions in literary studies, drawing on the English department’s wide range of intellectual interests.

Feeling Modern: Dramas of Contingency in Modernist Fiction

This talk will explore modernism as a structure of feeling around dynamic historical changes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries. The talk considers works by Frank Norris, Henry James, and James Joyce to explore what Sara Ahmed calls the “’drama of contingency’ how we are touched by what comes near.” Rather than regard modernism through the optic of Freud’s theories of mourning and melancholy and the politics of trauma and loss, I want to use affect theory to account for identities still in formation and whose narratives have yet to be written.

This lecture will be chaired by Professor Peter Middleton.
