Time capsule photography competition

Photography competition

THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED -  FINALISTS WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON

Spring is finally here and its time to open the shutters and get behind your cameras to enter a photography competition to mark a key milestone in the construction of the new Life Sciences building. In March the concrete foundations of the building will be completed and somewhere under the concrete will be buried a Time Capsule containing a selection of items to represent the past, present and future of the University, including the winning images. In 30 years time we hope that the future occupants of the building will excavate the Time Capsule so that they can see what we were up to in 2009.

The theme of the competition is "Bringing Science to Life" and this is open to personal interpretation. However entries must have the bioscience world at their heart - that is any of the sciences that study the structure and behaviour of living things.

Among our panel of judges are the Emmy award winning photographer David Barlow and nature photographer and TV presenter Chris Packham (external website).  Both are graduates of the University and former students of the School of Biological Sciences.

The competition is free to enter and up to four electronic images in colour or black & white can be submitted to one of four categories:

  1. Year 11, 12 and 13 students studying at a School or FE College located in Hampshire. Entries should be submitted for each School or College by a member of teaching staff on behalf of the individual entrants. Up to four images per School or College can be submitted and the School or College concerned will be required to obtain the necessary parental consent for their students’ participation in strict accordance with the competition rules.
  2. Undergraduate students - anyone enrolled on an undergraduate programme of study at the University of Southampton.
  3. Postgraduate students - anyone enrolled on a postgraduate programme of study at the University of Southampton who is not also employed by the University.
  4. Alumni - anyone who is an alumnus of the University of Southampton.

Each entry should be accompanied by the full name and email address of the individual entrant(s). Entries submitted by current University of Southampton students should also include their student ID number. For entries submitted by a School or FE College, the name and email contact details of the relevant teacher and name of the College or School should also be included.

All entries must also be accompanied by a description of each image, when and where it was taken, as well as the category to which the image(s) is being submitted. Entries should be submitted as jpg files and either :

(a) emailed to b85@soton.ac.uk and clearly marked with the word “Competition” in the subject box; or

(b) submitted on disc by post to:

Science Photography Competition,

University of Southampton,

Bassett House,

Chetwynd Road,

Southampton SO16 3TU.

The competition closes on Friday 13 March 2009, at mid-day for entries submitted on disc or at midnight for emailed entries. Entries received after the closing date/time will not be eligible for entry to the competition. All entrants should read the full set of competition rules before submitting their entry.

The Finalists (5 in each of the four categories) will be notified by email on 18th March 2009 and invited to attend an event at the University on the afternoon of Wednesday 25th March 2009 at which the winners of each category and an overall winner (selected from the four category winners) will be announced.

The overall winner will receive a prize of photography vouchers to the value of £250. Each of the three runners-up will receive a prize of photography vouchers to the value of £100.  Prizes have been donated by the Schools of Biological Sciences and Medicine.

Get creative!
