Car Parking

Broadlands Car ParkThe University of Southampton provides car parking for staff, students, visitors and contractors both on the academic sites and at Halls of Residence. However, demand for car parking permits considerably outstrips supply, particularly at Highfield. No-one may park on site without displaying a valid permit unless they are visitors who can be booked into the Visitors’ Car Park at Highfield. Student parking at academic sites is normally limited to those with medical needs

First year undergraduates resident in Halls are required to agree not to keep a car in Southampton. Applications for exemption on certificated relevant medical or extreme compassionate grounds need to be made in writing to parking@soton.ac.uk before taking up residence.

Permits are not required for motor cycles or scooters but they must not be parked in areas designated for car parking.

Information on graduation parking can be found through the Graduation homepage at http://www.southampton.ac.uk/graduation/index.shtml and how to get here.

Undergraduate Visit Days, Open Days and Campus Tours can be booked via http://www.soton.ac.uk/study/visitsopendays/index.html.

If you are arranging a visit day please click http://www.southampton.ac.uk/estates/services/transport/index.html.

Core areas of responsibility:

  • Vetting of applications and issue of permits to validate parking by staff, students, contractors and visitors.
  • Patrolling of car parks at Highfield.
  • Issuing of fines where vehicles fail to display valid permits or tickets and/or are parked where they should not be.
  • Reviewing appeals against parking tickets where the appellant considers there were extenuating circumstances when a fine was issued.
  • Managing the Visitors’ Car Park at Highfield.
  • Booking of visitor parking at Highfield, where more than 5 spaces are required by a School or Professional Service Group, when space allows.
  • Arranging parking for special events such as Graduation and Public Lectures.
  • Supervision of vehicles loading and unloading for events off Library Square West and in the John Hansard Gallery at Highfield. Weekend cover may be available at a charge.
  • Coning off car parking space for specific needs.
  • Road and car park marking and review of parking signage on academic campuses.
  • Regular reviews of provision of disabled bays.
  • Vehicle towaway requests.
  • Annual review of car parking policy.

Permit holders must accept the Regulations for the Registration and Parking of Motor Vehicles. This is to ensure that vehicles are properly parked. Each year, the University reviews car parking policy, regulations, parking fees and fines. All car park and route marking, together with advisory and warning parking signage, is reviewed at least annually. Additional disabled bays are always provided as a matter of urgency.

Signage, at the entrances to all access points to academic campuses and permanent car parks, indicates where drivers are entering a private car park for which permits or parking tickets are required at defined times. Vehicles parked in breach of the regulations will attract fines or warnings and, in extreme cases, may be towed away.
