Sustainable development is concerned with finding the balance between economic, environment and social aspects.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) published a Sustainable Development Strategy in 2005. The paper outlines the importance of sustainable development in shaping the future direction of Higher Education in England.

At the University of Southampton we are committed to the principles of sustainable development and have set ourselves a target to become a "responsible and environmentally conscientious organisation by 2010 (Corporate Strategy, 2004)."
