Faculty of Engineering and the Environment
The Faculty of Engineering and the Environment is one of the leading engineering faculties in Europe, with a strong focus on addressing real world problems that affect and involve people and the environment.
The Faculty brings together a wide range of disciplines, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in audiology and environmental science as well as acoustical, civil and environmental, mechanical, and aeronautical/astronautical engineering and ship science. Mechanical Engineering is taught at the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus, as well as in Southampton.
The Faculty is committed to providing education in an environment in which knowledge and understanding are created as well as passed on. Postgraduate taught and research programmes form an integral part of our activities, and our vibrant research community consists of over 340 academic/research staff and more than 370 research students.
In the 2008 RAE, the Faculty was ranked second in the UK in terms of research power for both civil engineering and mechanical/aero/production engineering.
Links with industry are crucial to the relevance of our research and education, and we are proud to host University Technology Centres and Research Framework Agreements with key partners including: Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Lloyd’s Register, Microsoft and Network Rail.
Over the past 60 years, the Faculty’s researchers have contributed to world leading developments in civil engineering, sound and vibration research, applied fluid dynamics, aerospace and maritime engineering. Five of our current staff are Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Faculty was awarded a Queens Anniversary Prize 2011 for our contribution to performance sports ranging from motorsport and yachting through to cycling, swimming and bob skeleton.
