Faculty of Medicine
The Faculty of Medicine consists of 1,250 undergraduate, 80 taught and 140 research postgraduate students. It has 370 academic and 340 other staff.
The Faculty’s research focuses on early translation of basic discoveries. Main research programmes are respiratory medicine, developmental sciences, cancer sciences, bone and joint diseases, and general practice, with cross-cutting themes in translational immunology and stem cells and regenerative medicine. It also has a reputation for its innovative approach to undergraduate medical education.
Academic activity is located primarily on the Southampton General Hospital site, 15 minutes from the main Highfield campus.
In the 2008 RAE, submissions were made by constituent elements of the Faculty to three Units of Assessment, two of which were ranked in the top ten in the UK based on GPA. These were cancer studies and primary care & community-based clinical.
