Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering
The Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering boasts world-leading facilities, teaching and research in Electronics and Computer Science, Optoelectronics, and Physics and Astronomy. It has 1,300 undergraduate, 300 taught and 500 research postgraduate students, as well as around 150 academic and 200 research staff members.
Most activities take place on Highfield Campus, and span a wide range of disciplines including astronomy, computer science, electrical power engineering, electronics, nanotechnology, optoelectronics, and physics. Researchers across three academic units (Electronics and Computer Science, Optoelectronics Research Centre, and Physics and Astronomy) undertake fundamental, transformative and world-leading research in all these areas.
In the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008, 95 per cent of our research was ranked as world-class or international standard. We are the best university in the UK for Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and are consistently ranked in the top 10 in the UK for Computer Science and IT, and Physics and Astronomy. We are also one of only a handful of universities to receive the prestigious title Regius Professor, an honour bestowed by the Queen.
Our research facilities include the £110M Mountbatten Complex, one of Europe’s leading multidisciplinary cleanroom facilities for research in nanotechnology, bio-nanotechnology and photonics; and the Tony Davies High Voltage Lab, with equipment able of generating one million volts. With world-leading facilities, world-class teaching and research, the Faculty offers excellent opportunities to both researchers and students.
The Faculty has a strong portfolio of spin-out companies and key partnerships with major industries worldwide including Microsoft, IBM, ARM, BT and Google.
