Hi, I'm Dom Kullander and I studied Film Studies within Film at the University of Southampton.

Film studies massively improved my ability to think critically about a subject, a key skill in television production. My research skills were also bolstered by the course. On starting my job, I realised how useful these skills are when adapted to complete tasks. I owe Southampton so much for allowing me to get my dream job in TV.

What did you enjoy about the course?

The course was an interesting mix of contemporary and historical film, giving a broad overview of the discipline and allowing you to delve in to the areas you found most interesting. A lot of the emphasis was on you to learn material outside of the lecture theatre, so if you were motivated you could go as deep into a subject as you wanted.

What is Southampton like as a place to study?

Southampton is perfectly designed as a university town. Everything is a short walk away, but the city centre has everything you need. There’s plenty of green open spaces too, right next to the main Humanities campus. I can’t think of anything Southampton is missing as a place to study!

Tell us about your current job?

I’m an Assistant Producer at sports media company Perform Group. My role is specifically on the rugby team, where I produce content for Premiership Rugby and the England rugby team. It’s a mixture of post-production, creative production and live events. Each weekend I’m at a game in the Outside Broadcast truck – I even get to do the post-match interviews!

How did your course help you in your current role?

What advice would you give to a student starting their degree at Southampton?

Try and find the right balance so that you can complete all your academic tasks but also make time for yourself to learn new skills with the many clubs and societies on offer. A healthy balance between these too will strengthen your profile when it comes to looking for jobs.
