Facilities

Our world-class buildings such as the award-winning EEE building, interdisciplinary Mountbatten complex and the Life Sciences building have contributed to the University of Southampton’s status as one of the best learning environments in the UK. These facilities are a result of an investment of £200 million.

Key facts

The University provides a wealth of social, arts and leisure facilities for students.

Off campus, you will find all the transport, shopping and leisure facilities you would expect from a multicultural city with a population of over 200,000 people.

Wireless and networked high-speed internet access is widely available across all campuses and in all five libraries.

Our postgraduate Film students have access to the latest audio-visual and research facilities

The Avenue Campus, where the majority of our teaching takes place, offers good audio-visual facilities and teaching/screening venues, including 35mm, 16mm and DVD screening facilities, and an extensive video and DVD library of over 8000 titles, many of them commercially unavailable. The Centre for Language Study provides excellent additional resources, including satellite television and access to multimedia technology, and internet facilities and Wi-Fi are available across the University.

In addition to facilities offered by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Film also provides a dedicated study room for postgraduate students. This provides a quiet place to meet, a PC workstation, as well as a small archive of journals, including Sight and Sound, and a collection of past dissertations and theses.

Location, Location, Location

Southampton's central position on the south coast presents a more affordable location than London in terms of location, while offering convenient travel options to a number of national archives. London Waterloo is often less than an hour and twenty minutes away from Southampton by train, with the BFI Southbank, with its free access to one of the world's greatest Film libraries, only ten minutes' walk away. This makes the BFI Library a convenient place to study in addition to the great facilities at Southampton.

Other facilities of note include:

Libraries and Avenue campus library : We have the largest university library in the south of England, which has a presence on five of the University's five campuses. In addition to arts and humanities collections at the Hartley and Winchester School of Art libraries, Film students can use the Avenue Library resources, which include an audio visual room with a significant film collection in both DVD and VHS format. We have subscriptions to major academic film journals as well as essential archive material such as the trade and fan magazines Picturegoer and Bioscope, essential resources for the study of film history. For more information on our film collections, see the library website.

Historical archives: The Hartley Library is home to unique and valuable historical archives and special collections including the Wellington and Palmerston archive and online databases, the Broadlands archive, and collections on named subjects such as the Parkes Jewish Studies collection, one of the best of its kind in the world.

Chawton House Library : Humanities at Southampton has a strong collaborative relationship with Chawton House Library (former residence of Jane Austen). The library houses a unique collection of books focusing on women's writing in English from 1600 to 1830.

Arts venues: On campus we host internationally acclaimed arts venues such as :

"The facilities available for film are excellent with a well-stocked library and video and DVD collection which I often use for specific research for film units, as well as when I fancy widening my knowledge of other areas of film."
