We are creating an international reputation for the quality of our research, and in our teaching we strive to fulfil students’ needs and expectations. We are committed to undertaking interdisciplinary research and teaching that connects in a concrete way; we are committed to making a difference.

Geography happens all around us and it is essential to understanding and solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including global environmental change, globalisation, the global recession, improvement of health and wellbeing and the elimination of poverty. These issues affect us all, and they motivate us to take action – to better understand the processes that underlie negative outcomes of certain policies and practices and to provide guidance to end users that will lead to better management solutions in the future.

At Southampton, our approach is focused on providing the best possible student experience. For example, we provide small-group teaching (tutorials) to facilitate direct interaction with staff and field courses to support learning through hands-on action and further close interaction with staff. Physical and computer practicals are embedded within the curriculum so that you can develop key skills and enhance your employability – and the broad curriculum allows significant student choice. Our commitment to increasing quality is enabled by listening to, reflecting on, and taking action in response to students and other stakeholders through committees, forums and regular surveys.

While we strive to increase quality in teaching and research we also emphasise the fun of studying geography and the fulfilment that comes with addressing critical problems and issues.
