Tackling global issues

From global environmental change to economic transformation, our staff are actively involved in researching the major issues affecting the contemporary world.

We have an excellent reputation for the quality of our teaching, which is based on our student-centred focus, the use of examples from our high quality research, and a commitment to using real-world case studies that impact on people’s lives around the globe. We have an enviable international reputation for our quality, vibrancy, innovation and most importantly our socio-economic impact on the world. 

We have a lively community of around 600 undergraduate and postgraduate students and around 70 staff and strive for excellence in geographical research and teaching. We pride ourselves on being one of the UK's leading university geography departments and were recently ranked sixth in the UK by The Times Good University Guide. In the last Research Assessment Exercise (2008), 55 per cent of our research activity was judged at least internationally excellent, with 20 per cent classed as world-leading.
