Learning how rivers behave in extreme conditions

Published: 3 March 2014

Getting caught in one of the biggest floods Cambodia has seen in years wasn't part of Geography and environment research fellow Chris Hackney's fieldwork plans - but it turned out to be a great opportunity for scientists to learn how rivers behave in extreme conditions.

Not only did Chris and other members of the research project team learn so much about how large river systems behave and respond to extreme events; they also now have first-hand experience of what extreme events look like, and how they affect the local environment and people.
