Major funding to create impact beyond the academic world

Published: 3 October 2014

A special campaign will kick start the University of Southampton’s search to find knowledge exchange activities that can benefit from a share in £750,000 of Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding.

The University was one of 20 leading UK universities awarded the Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) grant by the ESRC to accelerate the impact of research particularly in the area of social sciences.

The IAA is intended to create impact beyond the academic world by speeding up the take-up of research findings by the non-academic sector (central and local government), the third sector and the private sector.

Geography and Environment, whose researchers played a major part in helping secure the ESRC funding, will be instrumental in helping to make their colleagues across the University aware of the potential funding available for knowledge exchange activities with non-academic partners.

All University researchers are invited to attend a special launch event where eminent Geographers from the University will lead on sharing information about their own research as well as details of what will be looked for from potential IAA applicants.

IAA applications are welcome from all areas of the University but the research must be relevant to social sciences and its societal impact.

The scheme will run until March 2018 and will fund:

  • secondments and projects to build relationships with the public sector, civil society, business and social enterprise
  • targeted events and briefings to focus on major public policy issues or engage with selected strategic partners
  • a series of development workshops for researchers wanting to enhance the non-academic public, social and economic impact of their research

Internal colleagues and external collaborators are welcome to attend, for more information on the launch event visit the IAA eventbrite page
