Geography and Environment at the University of Southampton is celebrating the news that its National Student Survey (NSS) 2015 scores have risen for the fifth year in a row.

Overall student satisfaction now stands at 92 per cent, a percentage point rise on last year’s results, and the department’s two undergraduate courses in Geography have both achieved excellent results across the board.

With the department recently making significant investments in expanding the human geography academic team, the BA Geography programme now scores 91 per cent for overall satisfaction, also achieving scores of over 90 per cent for a number of other measures, including the quality of teaching, the course and its resources.

The satisfaction scores for our BSc Geography course are also exemplary, with a 93 per cent rating for overall satisfaction. 100 per cent of BSc students surveyed felt that staff were good at explaining things.

The excellent NSS1 scores come hot on the heels of the department’s recent success in various national league tables. The Complete University Guide (CUG) 20162 shows that Geography at the University of Southampton has risen seven places from 20th position in 2014 to joint 13th place this year. The Guardian’s University Guide 2016 also ranks Geography at Southampton in 13th place.

Professor Steve Darby, Head of Geography and Environment, said: “We are delighted to have achieved such excellent results in the NSS survey and the national league tables. This is a true reflection of the high quality education and excellent resources we are committed to providing for our students, as well as showing that we listen to our students when they have highlighted areas for improvement, and responded to their concerns.”

1. The NSS is a national, independent survey which asks final year undergraduates to rate the quality of their Higher Education (HE) experience. The annual survey runs across all publicly funded HE Institutions (HEIs) in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Additionally, Further Education Colleges (FECs) in England and Further Education Institutions (FEIs) in Wales with directly funded Higher Education students are eligible to participate.

2. The CUG tables are compiled by Mayfied University Consultants and are an independent guide to university rankings around the UK.
