Congratulations to Dr Lindsey Cherry who was awarded one of four Fellowships of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine, Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow for making a ‘significant contribution to the profession’ through both research and clinical development, after nomination from consultant medical and academic colleagues, and review by the senior Faculty panel. This is the first Faculty of Podiatric Medicine within a UK medical Royal College

A message from our Dean, Dame Jessica Corner: Today we have made history. Five colleagues have been appointed to Professorial roles in Health Sciences! Many congratulations to Jo Adams who is promoted to a Personal Chair; Jackie Bridges – Personal Chair; Rob Crouch – Honorary Professor; Anne Kennedy – Professorial Fellow in Research; and Mary Gobbi – Professorial Fellow in Education. Andre le May has also been awarded an Emeritus Professor Title. These promotions take effect from August 1st.

These are in addition to Claire Foster and Lisette Schoonhoven who were promoted to Personal Chairs earlier in the year. This is a wonderful achievement.

Revd. Christine Whitehead, a lecturer in nursing, was awarded with a WoW certificate for her WoW award which she won in March 2015. The award was nominated by Christine’s Trust manager for the extensive improvements she has made to the coeliac service in the Trust, despite only working for the Trust five hours a week. WoW is a customer excellence award that is offered country wide. Hampshire Hospital Trust currently receive about 300 nominations a month and have one of the highest numbers of nominations in all the health care organisations that offer the award.

Congratulations to nursing graduate Will Pooley who was made an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for his services in combating the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Within six weeks of travelling to Sierra Leone last summer, Will became the first Briton to be evacuated from the continent with the virus. Following his treatment at the Royal Free Hospital in London, Will then returned to Sierra Leone in October to continue his work.

The Postgraduate Research Conference was a huge success today, well attended and enjoyed by everyone, many of whom tweeted using #HSPGRConf2015.

Congratulations to Dr Martin Warner who, along with four colleagues, successfully abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower, for Arthritis Research UK. The team raised in excess of £3500, £400 of which was the contribution from the donations you made to Mark’s page.

Dame Jessica Corner has co-signed a letter to the Times, published on 9 June, which urges ministers to resume NICE safe staffing guidelines. The evidence reviews for adult wards and A&E were undertaken here at Southampton. The A&E guidance (and review) were delayed for publication due to Purdah, and have now been suspended.

Finally…in the latest edition of the British Journal of Nursing, emeritus professor Alan Glasper discusses the recently published Royal College of Nursing survey report that campaigns to raise awareness of the threats to post-qualifying education for nurses.
