Dr Borthwick, Associate Professor within the Faculty of Health Sciences, has assumed the role of Vice President of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists/College of Podiatry, where he is already a serving member of the executive Council.

The Society aims to raise the profile of podiatry so that it is recognised by the public, fellow healthcare professionals, policy-makers and commissioners of healthcare as being synonymous with foot health as well as to lead the development of an international model for podiatric practice.

Alan has taken up the position alongside his role at the University where his research has largely focused on the contemporary and historical sociology of the allied health professions in the UK and Australia, and in particular on the profession of podiatry. Alan is highly distinguished and was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2016 in recognition of his services to health and health research.

Dr Borthwick has authored over 90 publications, including a number of research papers, book chapters, editorials and CPD papers.

Alan commented, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to become a Vice President, which will involve helping to shape policy and deliver the strategic plan for the organisation. It links clearly with my role at the University, allowing better alignment of professional and educational considerations”.

The role of Vice President includes promoting the Society’s vision and strategic goals and serving on the Strategic Planning and Implementation Board. It also involves advising the Chair and sitting on the Awards and the Selection panels for members of Council, the executive body of the Society and College. Alan will continue in the role until July 2019.
