Stroke patients often experience weakness in the upper limb which may lead to reduced function and independence. Intensive therapy that combines Functional electrical stimulation (FES) with un-weighing devices (robots) has been shown to be effective and has potential to be used clinically in rehabilitation. Recent research programmes at Southampton have developed state-of-the-art systems combining technologies. In particular, a recent clinical trial with stroke patients has successfully used FES applied to the triceps and anterior deltoid muscles, using novel "iterative learning control" (ILC) schemes which learn the optimum stimulation needed to best assist the movement over repeated attempts at a task. This project will research the use of ILC to control FES of the wrist and hand, in addition to the shoulder and elbow, and study the usability of the system.
