Research assessment

The RAE measures the quality of research conducted in universities and other higher education institutions in the UK against international standards of excellence and enables the higher education funding bodies to distribute public funds on the basis of quality. These funds will allow us to continue to recruit the best research staff and students, carry on building strong links with industrial and research partners, and sustain investment in our facilities.

Making a difference to people's lives
The impact of our research

Our research was recognised by the RAE 2008 review panel who rated 85% of research outputs in the nursing and midwifery submission as world leading or internationally excellent in terms of their quality. The panel also praised the significant impact of this research on health care policy and practice, as well as our robust research career development framework.

The research portfolios in cancer, palliative and end of life care, organisation and delivery of care, and rehabilitation and health technologies continue to grow from strength to strength. At the same time we remain firmly committed to maintaining our focus on generating the highest quality research which makes a difference to people’s lives.

Collaborations

Collaboration and interdisciplinarity are important components of our research and we collaborate widely with NHS Trusts and Professionals, who are important partners in well-integrated programmes of research and education.
