Profile Year 3
Leah Doak
I am a current English/History combined honours student in my second year of study. Studying both these subjects at Southampton has proved to be challenging and interesting, as my studies have varied from looking at medieval letters to visiting Victorian cemeteries. Southampton offers a wide range of modules, keeping it fresh and very different to areas of history that I had previously focussed on in Secondary school.
The university's own separate campus for humanities is five minutes walk away from the main campus, making it a more personal and relaxed space for meeting with friends and studying. There is always lots happening within the history department and the committee organise frequent socials for all the students.
I decided to move away from my home in Northern Ireland to come to Southampton and I am very glad that I did. It is a vibrant place to live and there is always something happening. The flexibility of being a humanities student allows me to participate in a wide range of clubs and societies. I am an active member in both the canoe club and canoe polo. There are a vast array of interesting and fun societies, many of which you can become a member of the committee in your second and third years. History and English is definitely not a nine-to-five course, but I love it for that reason. I have personally found that if you organise your time well and prioritise your studies, there is plenty of time to meet the demands of your course, as well as getting involved in the extra curricular activities.
