Information for current students

Welcome to History at Southampton. In this section you will find information on resources for current students. You can also download useful documents from the left-hand menu.

We possess excellent resources including the best library in the South-east of England outside London and Oxford, with many collections of original historical documents including the Wellington, Palmerston and Mountbatten papers and the Parkes Archives.

And don't forget to check out our flourishing History Society, run by students for students, which holds a series of social events throughout the year.

PLEASE NOTE: HISTORY ATTENDANCE POLICY

  1. If you have to miss a lecture or seminar for a good reason, such as a job interview, let your tutor(s) know in advance if at all possible, and find out the necessary preparation for the following week. If you miss a class through illness, please let your tutor know as soon as you are able.
  2. Course tutors will report all absences to the History Discipline Administrator. If you have missed two classes in any course module without offering an adequate explanation for your absence, your subject tutor will contact you; if you miss more than three classes in any course module, your subject tutor will contact your personal tutor. More than 5 absences from seminars without adequate explanation is likely to result in the failure of the module (warning: this has happened on a number of occasions in previous years). Absence from seminars will be recorded on your file and may be invoked at the final examination meeting as an element in the adjudication of your final degree result. Poor attendance is also likely to be mentioned in any reference you may subsequently ask us to write for you.
