Three Year Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship

Professor Mark Cornwall has been awarded a 3-year Major Research Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust (for 2017-20). There were 197 applications for the Major Fellowships this year, and 33 were awarded (21 for the full 3-years). Mark's Fellowship is to research and write a monograph, contracted to OUP on the following topic:

Treason and Disloyalty in the Late Habsburg Monarchy
Treason regularly surfaces in human history, yet historians have rarely analysed its significance in legal or political discourse. This research project uses the crime of treason as a prism through which to reassess the evolution and stability of the late Habsburg empire (1848-1918). The Habsburg regime stereotyped new “traitors” as it strove to manage citizens’ allegiance in the context of emerging foreign threats to imperial security. With its multilingual case studies in Czech, Croatian, Hungarian and German, the project offers a radically new interpretation of why the Habsburg empire collapsed, as well as opening up the field of 'treason' as an area for scholarly investigation.

Professor Cornwall is also currently a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, and has been awarded a Visiting Fellowship at the Herder Institute, Marburg (for October 2017).
