The Book of Fines: The Annual Accounts of the Mayors of Southampton, Volume 2, 1488-1540

The Book of Fines: The Annual Accounts of the Mayors of Southampton is a register of fines paid to the town government for crimes committed within their liberty from 1488-1540. The offences range from minor infractions to larger ones such as murder, giving a wide variety of the types of illicit activity in the town as well as often those involved and where they were from. Butler provides information on the town government, including its officers and civic records as well as history and a glossary for the Book of Fines itself.
Volume 3 will be published in 2011.
