Why Southampton?
Here at Southampton we are committed to research-led teaching, and this is very much reflected in the activities of the History department. We are proud of the contributions we as historians make to our individual fields, and see the quality of the research produced by this department as a major reason for you to choose to come here. We also work hard to ensure that our teaching is informed by the latest developments in the field, and are constantly updating our undergraduate courses to reflect this.
At the same time, we endeavour to foster a friendly, informal atmosphere in which students feel free to come and ask for advice and guidance. This is as true for the pastoral side of our support as it is for the academic side. Each student is given a Personal Tutor with whom he or she remains in constant contact throughout the three years, and to whom he or she can turn for help or advice with any problems.
Potential students are encouraged to attend our preview and visit days and to talk to our current students to get a true sense of the very high quality of teaching and facilities offered by the department and the University.
Reputation
Our standing in the international community is reflected not only in the range of our own activities, but in our connections with prestigious universities abroad. We receive regular visits from scholars from all over the world, both to research in our own archives and to speak as guest lecturers. We encourage undergraduates to participate in seminars and attend lectures given by visiting historians - we believe firmly in integrating them into the academic life of the department.
Through our links with other European universities under theĀ Erasmus scheme students can also elect to spend a semester studying abroad in Paris, Amsterdam, Bergen, Caen, Potsdam or Wroclaw.
Living in Southampton
Southampton is a lively, modern port city of about 200,000 people, with excellent transport links to London, the New Forest, the Isle of Wight, Bournemouth and the Dorset coast. It also has a rich archaeological, architectural and maritime heritage. Check out our location section for further information.
Unless you already live locally, if you have firmly accepted our offer (and reached the required grades, if the offer is conditional), you are guaranteed a place in a University Hall of Residence in your first year.
