After you graduate

There are many choices available after gaining your degree. You will leave Southampton with a wealth of skills and a competitive edge, whatever career path you choose.

Graduates leave with a competitive edge
Opening up career options

You may be looking for relevant paid employment straight away, or planning to undertake further study – in which case you could become part of Southampton's 5,000-strong postgraduate student community and have access to state-of-the-art learning resources.

You might be considering a switch into a completely different field, or you may be unsure of where to go next. Whatever your situation, the Careers and Employability Service offers a wide range of services and support to students at all stages of their University life.

See History's alumni pages for profiles of some of our recent History graduates who are now working in a diverse range of fields.

Further study

We have a busy and high-profile Graduate School supporting teaching and research to PhD level. Some of our BA students stay within History for postgraduate work alongside specialists in their chosen field. If you wish to pursue this option you will need an upper second-class honours degree or above in a relevant discipline, though each application is considered on a case by case basis. Visit the postgraduate section to find out more.

A degree in history gives you an impressive set of skills, which you can apply in any area. After graduating, I hope to work in investment banking... to this end, I have just spent the summer working as an intern in the investment management department of a private bank in London.
