I wanted to study business in the UK and University of Southampton is one of the highest ranked universities in England. The course looked very innovative and the modules seemed to suit me well. Also, the fact that Southampton is pretty close to London, as well as the coast, made the city a good fit for me.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Southampton?

Both the city and the course affected my decision. I wanted to study business in the UK and University of Southampton is one of the highest ranked universities in England. The course looked very innovative and the modules seemed to suit me well. Also, the fact that Southampton is pretty close to London, as well as the coast, made the city a good fit for me.

What were your first impressions of the University of Southampton?

My first impression was the scope of the campus. I thought it was huge and was (still is) very impressed by the variety of faculties, societies, sports, shops and cafés. It seemed impossible to ever find my way around and get to know the campus. However, you get familiar with it faster than you think and suddenly you find yourself in a routine with where to go and what to do. For example, you will most likely have the same rooms for the same lectures/seminars/tutorials from week to week, find your favourite place to meet your friends or grab a coffee.

What do you enjoy the most about living in Southampton?

The fact that there is always something going on, on campus and off. If you have to study but do not feel like sitting alone at home, then go to the library. If you feel you have too much spare time, join a society or sport. If you want to learn more than what is already in your course, go to guest lectures. In other words, you never have to get bored.

What is your favourite spot on campus?

Definitely the green space outside the library when it is sunny. Being able to take short study breaks right outside the library, sitting on the grass surrounded by other students, gives you an extra boost to keep going. Second runner up has to be the Arlott or La Piazza because of their coffee, which also is much needed to boost your studies when you are a caffeine addict like me.

What has been your proudest accomplishment while you were in Southampton?

Beyond the fact that I actually moved abroad, which I see as a pretty great accomplishment itself, I consider my commitment to the degree as my proudest accomplishment. Business degrees, among others, focuses on more than academic skills to succeed in the future. Keeping that in mind, I joined a volunteering society as a fresher. Now, going into my second year, I am the president of the same volunteering society.

Would you recommend the University of Southampton to students from your home country?

Yes, absolutely. The UK itself is a great place for Norwegians to study if they want to improve their English skills and explore other cultures. Not only is it both easy and cheap to travel between Norway and Southampton, but it is very easy to apply as well. The organisation SONOR, Study Outside of Norway, is well connected to the University of Southampton and will help you with everything from motivation letter and application to finding a place to live. The University offers a wide range of courses, so I recommend it to everyone who would like to study abroad.

What will you do with your degree after you have finished your studies?

I am doing a 4-year course, meaning I will have a placement year during my third year of study. The goal is to secure a graduate job during my placement in an international company. I would really love to work with projects, which would give me the opportunity to work in a lot of different places with a variety of people. Getting a Master’s degree is also on my to-do-list, but I think focusing on my Bachelor is enough for now.
