Humanities is hosting a two day international conference on 3-4 July 2012 on the future of biography, which is expected to attract many leading academics and writers.

Keynote speakers at Can Biography Survive at Avenue Campus will include journalist and writer Frederic Raphael, bookshop founder Tim Waterston, publisher Stuart Proffitt, and biographer Richard Holmes.

The conference is being organised by Dr Adrian Smith (History) and Professor Ray Monk (Philosophy) as part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Research Network aimed at providing a forum for vigorous multidisciplinary debate, about biography in the early 21st century and exploring its function and purpose.

There will also be sessions on a wide range of subjects allied to biography such as how to tell the stories of international aid workers, the life of Emmeline Pankhurst and the history of fashion modelling in London in the postwar years.

“In bringing together such a wide variety of people involved in writing, producing and selling biographies, this conference will offer a unique chance to hear the views on the future of biography from the people who, in very different ways, will be shaping that future,” says Ray.

Recordings of the talks will be posted on the biography network website.
