TEAtime lectures 2012
Join current PhD students, early career researchers from across the University of Southampton, and guest speakers from industry at our TEAtime lectures. In early 2012 we are holding two half-day sessions centred around the following fundamental aspects of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM):
Light & Sound (22 February 2012)
Earth & the Environment (14 March 2012)
During the half-day sessions (12.30 - 15.30) participants attend a seminar/workshop based session followed by a main lecture. Participants also recieve a complementary lunch.
TEAtime is free to all Hampshire and the Isle of Wight schools and colleges. For further information or to book please email our TEAtime Coordinator, or phone: 02380 598710.
Free public evening TEAtime lecture: Coral Reefs in Crisis. 14th March 2012
Coral reefs are one of the most diverse and productive ecosystems on the planet. Approximately 500 million people rely directly on coral reefs; they provide income through tourism and fisheries, coastal protection through dissipation of wave and storm energy and are a key source of protein for dependent populations in less economically developed countries. In 2008, it was estimated that 19% of the worlds corals reefs have already been lost and that a further 15% are under the imminent threat of being lost within the next 10-20 years. This talk will explore the threats to coral reefs, providing an insight into how natural and man-made stressors affect these magnificent structures.
This free talk is open to local schools, members of the public, and staff and students of the University. Booking is advisable: to book your place contact the TEAtime Coordinator or tel: 02380 598710.
