Lifelong Learning

Philosophy

Philosophy at the University of Southampton is recognised internationally for its world class teaching and research and hosts a range of events that are open to the general public. For example, this is the third year that we have run our highly successful Philosophy Cafés in conjunction with the John Hansard Gallery.

With the aim of bringing together philosophy enthusiasts from both within the University and the wider local community, the Philosophy Cafe hosts regular, informal lunchtime discussions that are open to all. We offer philosophical stimulation in a relaxed atmosphere for like-minded individuals where no previous philosophical experience is required – just an appetite for ideas.

Each free session begins with a short talk by one of the University’s Philosophy experts, followed by an open forum for debate. Discussions are relaxed with groups large enough to enjoy a number of diverse opinions, yet small enough to allow you to put your views across.

Please note the Philopsophy Cafés are free of charge and there is no need to book - just turn up.

For details of our other public events, including our latest series of lectures at the City Art Gallery, our new Ethical Challenges lectures and our forthcoming Nietzsche Cultural Day, please click on the tabs at the left.
