Programme Details

What is involved in the ProgrammeShip ploughing the waves

Each student is assigned a supervisory team at the University together with an industry mentor at their sponsoring company.  The lead academic supervisor and student agree on the research area in consultation with the industry mentor, as well as on the appropriate choice of any modules to be taken.  Supervisors monitor progress on a continuous basis.

Modules are predominantly from the School of Management MBA programme with technical modules chosen from those offered on 'Masters' courses across the Faculty.  Generic skills normally include a 4-day intensive course provided by the University's Researcher Development & Graduate Centre (RDGC).  Students may also choose to take supporting subjects such as a foreign language.

Taught modules must usually be completed by the end of Semester 2 in Year 1.  The summer of Year 1 is then spent undertaking preliminary research to better understand the subject area and help define the direction of research that will occupy the following 3 years.

A report must be written at the end of the first 12 months providing an overview of the intended research and initial research plan.  Progression and milestones in Years 2, 3 and 4 follow PhD practice.   Download the Programme dates (pdf).

Funding

We typically have ten studentships (plus fees) per year to award competitively. Students receive a four-year, tax-free award at the EPSRC recommended level (currently £14.8K per annum) - which is in excess of the PhD stipend - but this stipend may be supplemented by the sponsor.  See 'How to Apply' for eligibility criteria.

IDTC Programme Manual and Guidance Notes

The Programme follows a 1 + 3 year model with the doctorate awarded for a dissertation in the same way as for a PhD.  The focus of all projects must be the inter-relationship between transport and the environment.  For details of the Programme see the IDTC EngD Programme Manual (pdf).

Generic Skills Training courses

All students who do not already have the necessary experience are expected to undertake training in Generic Skills.  The courses run by the Researcher Development & Graduate Centre (RDGC) meet this requirement.
