General information and guidelines
The following sections offer general information for students from Korea who are interested in studying at the University of Southampton. If you want more details about entry requirements you should contact the relevant Admissions Office within your chosen department.
- Foundation entry requirements
- The International Foundation Year, progressing to undergraduate degree in Management, Humanities, Arts and Social Science courses requires students to have completed Inmungye KodBng High School Diploma, achieving at least average grade B(woo) overall with grade B(woo) in relevant subjects for their chosen undergraduate course.
- The Engineering Foundation Year, progressing to undergraduate courses in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science and Geophysics courses requires students who have completed Inmungye KodBng High School Diploma, achieving at least average B(woo) overall with grade B(woo) in maths and physics.
- The Science Foundation Year, progressing to undergraduate courses in Biology, Chemistry and other Science-related courses require students who have completed Inmungye KodBng High School Diploma, achieving at least average grade B(woo) overall with grade B(woo) in maths and a science subject. This course does not progress to an undergraduate degree in Medicine. International students interested in studying Medicine at degree level are advised to consider BSc Biomedical Sciences.
- The language requirement for Foundation Year courses at the University of Southampton is IELTS 5.5 in all four components, TOEFL 72 with Writing 17, Listening 17, Reading 18, Speaking 20 or equivalent UKBA recognised language test.
- Undergraduate entry requirements
- Students with the following qualifications will be considered for direct entry to the University of Southampton's Bachelor's Degrees:
- Overall B grade (pass) in the High School Certificate plus a Foundation Year;
- Overall B grade (pass) in the High School Certificate plus a first year of an Associate Degree;
- UK A Levels obtained in Korea (the minimum grades required vary depending on the department);
- 5.5 IELTS or equivalent
- Between 28 and 38 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB).
- Postgraduate entry requirements
- Students with the following qualifications will be considered for direct entry to the University of Southampton's postgraduate programmes:
- GPA of 3.0 from a University Bachelor's Degree (Haksa);
- Students interested in studying a PhD at the University of Southampton need good grades in ther Bachelor's and Master's programmes as well as a strong research proposal.
- English language entry requirements
- Students from Korea need to demonstrate their level of English language proficiency. For more details, consult the information available about English language entry requirements on the general pages of the International Office.
- Scholarships for students from Korea
- The following shows key scholarship scheme available for Korean students:
- 60th Jubilee Scholarships 2012: 2 awards of £2,500 towards academic fees are available for master applicants from Korea. All offer holders who have achieved at least 80% in their undergraduate degree from a Korean university are eligible to apply.
- You may want to ask the British Council Korea or the Korean Embassy in London as they may be able to provide information about external scholarships.
