The standard entry requirement for postgraduate study at the University of Southampton is a score of 2.1 or above in a UK Bachelors degree, or international equivalent.
Postgraduate applicants are usually expected to have completed 15 years of progressive higher level full-time education. Relevant work experience is not always necessary but it can be used to support a postgraduate application.
If you do not meet our normal entry requirements for our Masters Programmes, you may want to consider our Pre-Master Programme available from 2012.
The National Academic Recognition Information Centre for UK (UK NARIC) can provide further information on the equivalence between overseas qualifications and the UK system. Specific information about entry requirements for different countries is available on our Country pages.
English language entry requirements
You will need to demonstrate an adequate level of English language that will enable you to benefit fully from your course. For most of our postgraduate courses, you will require a score of 6.5 IELTS or equivalent.
We also accept a number of other official English language qualifications.
We also offer English language courses for international students in the summer and during the academic year, which help students to improve their English language and academic skills.
Nationals of certain countries are generally given exemption from having to take a formal English language test. See here for a list of exemptions.
