As well as ‘A’ levels (UK secondary education system) we will accept a wide variety of international qualifications for entry to our courses.
The National Academic Recognition Information Centre for UK (UK NARIC) can provide further information on the equivalence between overseas qualifications and the UK system. Specific information about entry requirements for different countries is available on our Country pages.
You may need to complete a Foundation Programme before your UK Undergraduate Degree if you have not completed 13 years of primary and secondary education. The University of Southampton offers its own Foundation Year programmes, but we also accept a number of foundation qualifications from external providers.
Foundation Programmes at other institutions recognised by the University of Southampton

We currently receive applications from students from Abbey College, Bath Academy, Bellerbys College, Bosworth College, Brockenhurst College, Brooke House College, Central College Nottingham, CATS College Canterbury, Chichester College, David Game College, INTO, Itchen College, Kaplan International Colleges, Padworth College, Sussex Downs College and many more.
Students interested in completing an Art Foundation Year are advised to contact our Winchester School of Art, which can offer relevant information about local Art Foundation providers.
English language entry requirements
You will need to demonstrate an adequate level of English language that will enable you to benefit fully from your course. For most of our undergraduate courses, you will require a score of 6.5 IELTS or equivalent.
We also accept a number of other official English language qualifications, and nationals of certain countries are generally given exemption from having to take a formal English language test.
We also offer English language courses for international students in the summer and during the academic year, which help students to improve their English language and academic skills.
