Scholarships for research students

The University is a thriving research-led academic community and we offer a variety of funding opportunities for high achieving EU and international students to pursue their doctoral studies (PhD) with us.

University of Southampton research studentships

Many of our current PhD funded opportunities are listed on the University's Job Opportunities website.

Each year the University's Postgraduate Research Scholarship Fund offers over 100 studentships with a value of £7,000 per year for three years. Each Faculty nominates suitable candidates for both Faculty-specific and centrally funded awards.

If you are an EU student you may also wish to check our research funding information for postgraduate UK and EU students.

Doctoral Training Centres (DTCs)

The University hosts and participates in a number of Doctoral Training Centres which are funded by one or more of the Research Councils. These centres focus on multidisciplinary approaches to challenging topics such as climate change, energy, our ageing population and hi-tech crime. Studentships are available for UK/EU students. A very limited number of studentships may be available for international applicants.

Faculty studentships

Below you can find details of PhD funding available in specific Faculties. You are advised to contact the academic department directly for the latest information.
