How to add a Blackboard menu item
You may wish to add a menu item to your Blackboard course. This can be done by using the Manage Course Menu function.
Access the Control Panel
1. Access your course's Control Panel.

2. Click on Manage Course Menu, it is located in the Settings area.

3. You are presented with a list of the menu items in the same order as they appear in the student's view of your course, with Modify and Remove buttons beside them. Along the top of the screen are options to add new menu items.
Add Content Area
The Add New Area: Content Area page will appear. This would create a new area similar to Course Documents where you could add content.
Add Tool Area
The Add New Area: Tool Area will appear. Tools are not used so often, they include online notepads and the options to change local settings which is useful if you are using offline content.
Add External Link
The Add New Area: External Link page will appear. This allows you to link to a web page. Thus, a student would click on that menu item and the web page you chose would appear in the content area to the right of the menu.
Add Course Link
The Add New Area: Course Link page will appear. This works in a similar way to Add External Link, however in this case instead of linking to an external webpage you can use this feature to link to another area of your course. Thus, a student would click on that menu item and the course area you chose would appear in the content area to the right of the menu.
Modify
Clicking on Modify beside any of the menu items allows you to change the name of the item and choose whether it is available to guests and or students.
Remove
A message will appear verifying that this area should be removed.
This action is irreversible.If Remove is selected for a Content Area it will be removed from the Course menu and the Course Control Panel and all of its contents will be deleted. If you wish to remove a number of areas, make sure to leave at least one content area or you will be locked out of your course.
Ordering content with dropdown menus
To change the order of items, click the drop-down arrow beside the relevant item and select a number. Course areas will appear in the Course menu in the order selected.

4. To add a menu item click a button at the top of the screen.

Set Menu Item Name
5. Enter a new name for the menu item in the textbox below the dropdown menu.
If you are adding a Tool area select the tool from the drop down menu.
If you are adding an External Link enter the web address into the relevant box.
If you are adding a Course Link choose the relevant area of your course which you wish to link.
Set Options
6. Set the options according to your preferences.
Allow Guest access
If Guest Access is turned on then this menu item will be available to Guests.
Allow Observer access
Ignore this option. The observer role is not used with our installation of Blackboard.
Available for Student/Participant users
Tick this option so that students can view the menu. If you wanted a staff only area you could untick this option and students would not be able to see the menu.
Submit
7. Click on Submit to finish. Your menu item will now be changed.
